Day 65: Shop at a SouthWood garage sale

6 Mar

Twice a year, in March and October, my neighborhood of SouthWood allows homeowners to have garage sales. Our restrictive Home Owners Association forbids it during other times of the year. Because of that, garage sale weekends are a big deal in SouthWood. The neighborhood makes a handy map that shows the addresses of all the homes having garage sales. It makes for a fun Saturday morning of hopping from house to house in search of inexpensive treasures. Beware that you will find the usual junk – old kitchen appliances, VHS tapes and dusty exercise equipment. But if you’re a parent, you will find incredibly inexpensive children’s clothes, car seats, strollers and bikes. There is less for adults, though I usually walk away each year with a new book or DVD. Like all garage sales, the good stuff goes fast, so it’s important to get an early start and bring a fistful of one-dollar and five-dollar bills. The official hours of the SouthWood garage sales are from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. though I found most homeowners wiped out by about 10 a.m.

Address: SouthWood is in southeast Tallahassee. The best entrances for the garage sale are from Capitol Circle and Blairstone or Capitol Circle and Merchant’s Row.

I stumbled on your blog last month and have been enjoying reading your suggestions. I also live in Southwood and participated in the yard sale yesterday. I read your “about you” and now totally understand why you arent in love with Tallahassee coming from Austin! I moved here from Daytona Beach 6 years ago, and while Daytona is not quite a culture mecca, I still found more things to do there than here in Tallahassee.

      Emily,

Thank you! Yes it has been an adjustment living here, as I’m sure it was for you. So far this blog has been great in terms of forcing me to learn what there is to do.
