Day 152: Eat a hot dog at VooDoo Dog

3 Jun

The sign reads: “Unique Hot Dogs and Hamburgers.” What new trick could be played on the palate with two of America’s most-available foods – burgers and dogs? But VooDoo Dog meets its promise with a playful menu that ought to equally delight fast food fans like myself and squeamish vegetarians like my wife. I counted 15 varieties of hot dog specialties called “House Dogs.” The list doesn’t even include the  do-it-yourself approach using any of 24 available toppings, ranging from mayo and mustard to more exotic toppings, such as pineapple, baked beans, eggs or guacamole. The names of the House Dogs were given some thought, like the Abe Frohman dog, a Chicago-style hot dog with tomato, cucumber, onions, pickles, relish and celery salt that pays homage to the movie “Ferris Bueller.” The burger side of the menu is just as fun. Someday I’d like to try the PB&B burger which is slathered in peanut butter. Vegetarians will love that all the dog and burger options can be made vegetarian. Located near Gaines Street, VooDoo Dog is well-placed to succeed whenever the G Street renovations finish. For now, it’s an affordable and groovy hangout for both nearby FSU and FAMU students and downtown workers. They have WiFi and later hours on weekends. – Mark Hollis
