Day 159: Bite into a pastry at Au Peche Mignon

8 Jun

I couldn’t believe Au Peche Mignon has been in Tallahassee for 20 years and I had no idea it existed until this week. This authentic French pastry shop sits almost anonymously in the busy Market Square shopping center. Behind a maroon awning and dark windows are the most delicate, decadent looking pastries I have ever seen. My mouth watered the second I walked in. For most women (and pastry-lovin’ men), Au Peche Mignon is like getting a sneak peek at heaven. There are eclairs, cakes, chocolate mousse cups, fruit tarts, coffee cakes, croissants and imported European cheeses, lavishly designed cakes, and a whole case of chocolate truffles and other candies. The charming young man behind the counter knew anything and everything about the ingredients use in each pastry and boasted that everything was homemade. Coupled with the lilting music in the background and I suddenly felt like I was in the movie Chocolat, an alternate universe of endless pastry-eating and frolics through the European countryside. Sadly my reverie was broken when I emerged into the asphalt Market Square parking lot. The one thing to note about Au Peche Mignon are their difficult hours. Twice I drove across town to find them close. They are only open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to  7 p.m.
