My Favorites

Not all of my “things to do” are equal. In fact, some of them I don’t think I will ever want to do again – I’m talking to you, Savannah’s Country Buffet.

I do have my favorites, places I wish I could go to every weekend. Here’s my Top 10 list, which I may tinker with as I continue discovering new things to do in Tallahassee. They are in no particular order.

1. Play bingo at the Moose Lodge. This experience wasn’t exactly unique to Tallahassee, but I got a kick out of this relatively inexpensive way to entertain yourself. If you love people-watching, you will love this. I enjoyed being around the Bingo fanatics who took me under the wing and showed me the ropes. It’s like a mini-Las Vegas in Tallahassee, albeit with far less glamour.

2. Order an ice cream sundae at Lofty Pursuits. This is the best ice cream sundae I’ve ever had. Period. This old-fashioned soda fountain shop has a great atmosphere and a menu of hundreds of items that will have you waxing nostalgic about the 1950s.

3. Cheer on the Tallahassee RollerGirls. It’s really, really entertaining to watch the roller girls in action and also inspiring if you’re a woman who is a little bit sick of the macho, male-dominated world of professional sports.

4. Sip coffee at All Saints Cafe. I love this all-night cafe because it reminds me of my college days and it’s one of the few things in Tallahassee open 24 hours that is not a Wal-Mart or Waffle House. They also have a pretty inventive menu of coffee drinks and lots of vegan options.

5. Tour Goodwood Plantation. You can learn so much about Tallahassee history from this one house museum. The grounds are beautiful and the house is filled with stories and antiques. If I had a visitor and could only take them to one Tallahassee museum, this would be it.

6. Sample the bubble bread at Bella Bella. If I ever moved from Tallahassee, I know the first thing I would do on a return visit is go to Bella Bella and order up some bubble bread. Who can resist the combination of delicious cheese and bread? Not me.

7. Go for a run or hike on the Miccosukee Greenway. This place soothes my soul. If you have a dog, bring them here and watch them run with wild abandon and joy through the open pastures. I feel the same way when I run on the greenway’s trails, which weave between wooded trails and open pasture areas.

8. See a movie at Student Life Cinema. My favorite place to watch a movie on the big screen in Tallahassee. This student-run theater shows a nice variety of flicks, from recent releases to old classics like Caddyshack. It’s also inexpensive compared to most theaters.

9. Go shopping on Broad Street in Thomasville. I know, I know. It’s not in Tallahassee. But Thomasville is within an hour’s drive away (or much less if you live on the north side of town.) Go on a Saturday for a great brunch and shopping. My favorite bookstore – The BookShelf – is on Broad Street as well some great home decor stores. They even have a fabulous running store.

10. Go to First Friday at Railroad Square. I’ve been to more First Fridays than I can count. I won’t swear it’s the best thing happening in Tallahassee on a Friday night, but you can’t beat the people-watching, abundant and unique art and food. On a personal note, I love that the Hare Krishna food guy is always there to deliver delicious vegetarian food to the masses.

If you think I’m insane for not including something in my Top Ten, let me know in the comments section. I’d love to hear what other folks consider part of their must-do-in-Tallahassee list.
